THE MIRACLE STEALER, a debut novel by Neil Connelly A debut perfect for publishers looking for well-written, literary, realistic teen fiction with a strong voice.
This YA novel from the critically acclaimed Neil Connelly will twist you in knots with its suspenseful and shattering take on faith, hope, and miracles. Strong, unconventional female protagonist will appeal to smart teen girl readers—think fans of The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, as well as Lois Lowry’s The Giver. It’s a page turner that also examines timely topics: media culture and how we define ourselves. THE MIRACLE STEALER is one of our lead titles for Bologna. A complete manuscript is attached for your submissions. As always, please contact us if you need any additional materials or information.
Summary: Andi Grant adores her 6-year-old brother Daniel, a "miracle child" who fell down a mine shaft and survived. Now, people regularly come to him for blessings and healings (which sometimes seem to work), but Andi is skeptical. She’s horrified by his exploitation and wants her brother to have a normal childhood. With the help of her once-and-maybe-future boyfriend Jeff, she devises a plan so dramatic that it will stop the attention on Daniel forever: an "Anti-Miracle" that will unravel with the slightest examination of the facts, and cast doubt on Daniel's powers forever.
As her plan comes together, a stalker draws closer, and the clock ticks toward Daniel's star turn, Andi finds herself wrestling with her own beliefs in faith and her brother, and wondering if what she really needs is . . . a miracle. Author Information: Neil Connelly is a professor of English at McNeeseStateUniversity in Louisiana, where he conducts the fiction writing workshop in the MFA program. His first novel, St. Michael’s Scales (AAL, 2002), received a starred review from Publishers Weekly.
