Ondine de Groot is an ordinary fifteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in the country of Brugel.  Ondine has a pet ferret called Shambles – but when Shambles suddenly starts talking one day, it’s pretty clear that he is no ordinary ferret. 

In fact, Shambles is not really a ferret at all: he’s Hamish McPhee, a young Scottish nobleman cursed by a witch after he offended her on a date.  But when Shambles turns back into Hamish temporarily, Ondine knows that she has to help him break the spell.  He is the most gorgeous boy she has ever met and her one true love.  He just can’t remain a ferret forever.  Can he?
